This Robot Finishes Drywall 3X Faster Than Humans. Now It Has $20 Million To Learn More Trades

Ever thought construction was too messy for robots? Think again! A startup called Origin is proving that wrong with its incredible robot, OG-1, which can finish drywall walls — from applying joint compound to sanding and priming — a whopping three times faster than a human crew. This isn’t just a lab experiment; OG-1 is already making waves on job sites, and now Origin has officially come out of stealth with a hefty $20 million in funding to really scale up its operations.

OG-1 is no small feat of engineering. It’s designed to fit through standard doors but can extend its reach up to 14 feet to tackle high walls and ceilings. What’s even cooler is its brain: it recognizes 200 different objects commonly found on a job site and, after a quick setup by a crew member, it navigates, identifies surfaces, uses multiple tools, and even checks its own work quality all by itself. Origin calls this advanced software its Construction Action Model, which uses a clever reasoning system to plan workflows and ensure the robot performs its tasks robustly and efficiently, minimizing the need for human intervention.

Origin isn’t selling these amazing robots outright; instead, contractors can rent OG-1 through a “robots-as-a-service” model. This approach is a game-changer, as the company claims customers can save a solid 20% on labor costs from day one, potentially boosting contractor net margins from typical 5–7% all the way up to an impressive 15–25%. With this new $20 million in funding, co-led by Accel and Zacua Ventures, Origin is all set to build out a bigger fleet of OG-1 robots and kick off pilot programs across the U.S. and Europe. And they’re not stopping at drywall finishing; next year, they plan to expand OG-1’s repertoire to include taping, drywall installation, stud installation, and even drilling, all using the same versatile hardware.
