This Robot Finishes Drywall 3X Faster Than Humans. Now It Has $20 Million To Learn More Trades

Robots are finally making serious inroads into one of the toughest industries out there: construction. Forget the pristine factory floors; we’re talking about messy, ever-changing job sites. But a new player, Origin, is shaking things up with their OG-1 robot, which can finish drywall walls – applying joint compound, sanding, and priming – an astonishing three times faster than a human crew. And get this: they’ve just landed a cool $20 million in funding to teach OG-1 even more tricks, promising to expand its capabilities beyond just drywall.

Now, “3X faster” sounds like a bold claim, right? I wondered if that was just raw speed, but Origin’s CEO, Yogesh Ghaturle, clarified that it’s measured across a complete shift, including setup, tool changes, and maintenance. So, it’s a genuine productivity boost. While an existing human crew member still acts as the robot’s operator, guiding it and ensuring it has materials, OG-1 handles all the repetitive, physically demanding work on its own. It navigates complex spaces, reaches up to 14 feet, tackles tricky corners, and even works around other trades without needing a cordoned-off area.

The brains behind OG-1 is something Origin calls a Construction Action Model (CAM), trained on a unique dataset gathered from live sites, lab demonstrations, and high-fidelity simulations. This extensive training means OG-1 can roll onto a new, unfamiliar site and get right to work without needing specific retraining – a huge win for real-world deployment. Origin has clearly learned that contractors need robots that are robust across *every* subtask, not just the final one. And with this new funding, they’re not just aiming for drywall; they’re looking to expand OG-1’s capabilities into other trades, promising a future where these intelligent machines dramatically increase efficiency and safety on our construction sites.
