Here’s The Most Affordable Humanoid Robot You Can Buy Now

My latest at Forbes: The Unitree R1 is about to go on sale in North America, Europe, Japan, Singapore and China starting at $4,900. That’s incredibly cheap for a functioning humanoid robot.

What do you get? A four-foot-tall, 60-pound robot that can walk, run, do cartwheels, get up off the ground, dance and do some light sparring. One-hour battery life with hot-swappable batteries, camera sensors, WiFi and Bluetooth, and AI-powered speech recognition. Max arm torque of about five pounds, so don’t expect it to move furniture.

It’s not going to do your laundry or cook dinner on its own anytime soon. But for researchers, hobbyists, developers building applications, and people who just want to see where this technology is going up close, $4,900 is a legitimately accessible price point. The fact that a functioning humanoid robot is now in the same ballpark as a decent laptop is itself a kind of milestone.
