My latest at Forbes: OpenAI released a white paper laying out how humanity can navigate the transition to artificial superintelligence without catastrophic inequality or instability. The company frames it as: AI is so transformative it requires a new economic and social framework to redistribute gains, protect against disruption and ensure democratic input into how the technology develops.
The six things: broad access to AI tools, AI-powered public services, a new economic framework to distribute AI-generated wealth, mechanisms to prevent dangerous concentration of power, robust safety and alignment research, and meaningful global governance.
Cynical reading: this is a company managing its public image and pre-empting regulation. Charitable reading: OpenAI genuinely believes it’s building something world-altering and wants to be part of the solution conversation. Both can be true at the same time. Either way, worth reading what the company building the most powerful AI systems on the planet thinks needs to happen when those systems get smarter than us.
